As the world advances into the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), intelligent sensor networks, and in-space manufacturing, the demand for highly functional and intelligent surfaces continues to grow. At the SEMI Lab, we aim to shape the future of surface engineering and advanced manufacturing by developing cutting-edge additive manufacturing technologies that enable next-generation functionality. Our research combines fundamental science, physics-based modeling, computational methods, and experimental manufacturing to understand and control material–surface interactions and translate this understanding into innovative manufacturing processes. Through this integrated approach, we seek to advance the design and fabrication of functional and smart surfaces with tailored mechanical, electrical, sensing, and energy-related properties. These capabilities support a broad range of emerging applications, including in-space manufacturing and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), physical unclonable functions (PUFs), 3D-printed electronics, smart and multifunctional structures, energy devices, electronic textiles, and rapid product development.

At the SEMI Lab, we are committed to addressing challenging problems at the intersection of surface engineering, materials, and additive manufacturing, translating fundamental understanding into innovative manufacturing technologies and functional systems.
